[Otacon sighs for the third time, as he tries to use his fishing rod properly. Ever since receiving the Old Rod from the guy in the Pokémon Centre on route_31, he has been aching to try it out. Not far from his location is a small pond. Perfect for trying his new rod out and perhaps catching some new Pokémon, right? There also seems to be a guy asleep next to the pond. Perhaps, he fell asleep whilst trying to catch a Pokémon?

Well the thing is......Otacon isn't the outdoor-sy kind of guy. He's a computer nerd and right now he's failing pretty badly. He has his line all tangled on the rod and can't seem to place the bait on the end of the hook very well either.]

Ow! [He cries out in pain, as he hooks his finger with the hook instead of the bait. Piplup and Nomad are just chilling nearby under a tree and looking pretty bored. Liquid slithers up to see if he can assist his trainer but changes his mind and slithers back to his shady rock. Leafy, his Bellsprout, is enjoying the sunshine and eating a few berries, whilst gazing upon his hapless trainer. Otacon sucks his injured finger and feel the urge to throw the rod down in anger.]

Snake? Can you help me? Anyone? This fishing thing isn't as easy as I thought it would be. Why are things so difficult?

[ The one sleeping, of course, is Snake. When Otacon had told him "Hey, let's go fishing!" he hadn't imagined the hard time it would be, forgetting that this Otacon hadn't been here before and had to re-learn the outdoors. So after Snake had set up his rod, he'd taken a nap, Starla resting on his stomach.

That all ended very quickly when he heard Otacon's shout of pain, Starla flapping her wings and fluttering off of the old man. Snake grunted, sitting up. ]

Relax, Otacon... These things take time. [ He gives Hal a once over with his eyes and smiles a bit. There's a smirk on his lips. ] Right, I forgot... You don't know how to fish, huh? Not as easy as it is in a video game, eh?

Hey, Snake. [The engineer looked behind him with a beaten sigh. Had he been that loud as to wake the old soldier? Obviously he had.]

I was just trying to fix my rod up and this happened. [He showed Snake the tangled rod.] Yeah, I'm pretty useless at this whole fishing thing but I want to catch some Pokémon in the pond. It shouldn't even be this hard. [It WAS easier in a video game for sure.]

Calm down, let me help.

[ Snake grabbed the rod from Otacon, and began to untangle it. ] These rods aren't that great; the guy we rented them from said they were the cheapest ones... Old Rods. Didn't make sense to rent the pricier ones since you've never been fishing before.

The lines are going to get more tangled, and I have no idea what we can catch with these rods and the cheap bait we were given... But the most important thing is to take your time. You're not going to catch a damn thing fussing about it. [ Finally getting it untangled, he handed it back. ] I haven't caught anything either, and I know how to fish. [ Placing his hand on Otacon's shoulder, he gave it a firm squeeze. ] Just relax.

The fish can probably smell your anxiety. Maybe that's why they're not biting. [ Heh. ]

Yeah, ok. [Otacon raised an eyebrow at Snake's obvious attempt at a joke on his part. He wasn't THAT bad, was he?]

I am trying my best, Snake. It's just....I never went fishing with anyone when I was a kid. Most boys go fishing with their dad's one time in their life, right? [He didn't want to talk about his dad right now, so set about concentrating on his rod.]

Maybe something will bite soon and I'll end up catching a new water type Pokémon. [He hoped.]

I never went fishing with my dad either, so we're in the same boat.

[ Fishing puns. Though, Snake had gone fishing once with one of his foster parents, but that wasn't really the same... He wondered what fishing with Big Boss would have been like. Probably dramatic. ]

As for new Pokémon, I'm not really sure... I've seen a lot of people catching Magikarp, and as far as I'm aware, it's pretty useless... But hey, it's your first time, so...

[ Snake reached over and took the rod from Otacon. ] You can't just leave the thing motionless. Switch around the lure a bit so it looks like something that's alive; that way the fish will go for it. If you get a bite, pull back on the rod.

[ The old soldier rubbed his chin a bit. ] Reeling it in doesn't hurt either. If it's tough, I'll help you out.

If you went fishing with Big Boss I would have loved to have seen that. [If only that were possible. How would it turn out?]

I'm not totally weak you know. [He frowned and realised that it sounded much more defensive than he had meant. You're no weakling right, Otacon? Only don't mention the time when Snake lifted you up by your shirt and dangled you by your feet. That was a long time ago now.]

Magikarp, huh? What moves do they know?

Splash.

Splash. And uh... Splash.

[ At least, this was what Snake had gathered from battling with fisherman. He never raised his own. ]

Oh right, and the most memorable: Flop around uselessly.

Huh? Just splash? It must know some other moves than just splash. [What a disappointment.]

Does it....evolve into anything else? [Please say it does, Snake.]

[ Snake shrugged his shoulders, handing the rod back to Otacon. ] I don't know. I've only ever seen it use splash... as for an evolution...

[ ... Wait, what did it evolve into? ] I know it does evolve, but I can't remember what into.

Hm. I'm really curious about the evolution now. [He frowned and glanced at his PokeGear out of curiosity.] According to this it says that Magikarp evolves into a....Gyarados. It looks like some sort of water dragon.

Oh yeah.

[ Didn't Liquid have one of those? He's PRETTY SURE that he did... a Water Snake and a Rock Snake. Heh. ]

Yeah, that thing is actually useful. It's just getting it to that level that's the hard part.

It sounds like a tough challenge to get any Magikarp to evolve. If it can't do any offensive moves against other Pokémon then how does it progress in battle? I wouldn't mind having another water-type in my party.

[That and it looks awesome.]

... I guess make it watch? I don't know.

I never really thought about it since all of mine can do something.

[Make it watch? Really, Snake? Would it work?]

Hm, I guess. I don't know how else Magikarp could evolve, since it's pretty much useless at using moves in battle. [He still wants to get one though.]

You should probably ask a breeder. They seem to know a lot about Pokémon and how to bring out their good points. There's probably someone here who knows how to train a Magikarp.

I don't think I ever caught one. I wasn't much of a fishing guy. [ Snake smirked, picking up his rod and checking the hook-- nope, nothing. ]

Perhaps I will in my next video call. [He could always do with help from others, right? Otacon nodded then went back to focusing on trying to catch something.]

I would have thought you'd be good at catching fish, Snake. What with having your father's genes and everything. [He might be teasing a little here, Snake.]

[ Snake frowned a bit and shook his head. ] Hey, soldier's genes aren't a catch-all. Besides, I'm not sure Big Boss had a lot of time for fishing... Not sure how much of a good idea it is to fish with one eye.

You're probably right. He had more important matters on his hands, like trying to stop the bad guys from destroying the world. I bet he had a good one eye, Snake. His lack of sight in one eye probably made his good eye even better than before. [Right?]

[ Snake groaned. Stop the bad guys? Looks like Otacon might have liked those reports that were leaked to the world. About how he was a Hero. True or not, Snake couldn't forget about what Big Boss was like near the end. He'd tried to kill him... twice. Snake had defeated him both times, but the second time was much more horrifying. ]

I honestly don't know. I mean, I wear an eye-patch, but it's not because I'm injured or anything... And I see a lot more with it on, too.
