How am I playing Otacon? Am I doing a good job or am I totally screwing up?

I think you've got the voice down, but it sounds a little awkward. In MGS4, Otacon and Snake are best buds, and with any best bud, there's a fair amount of teasing and bickering going on. Otacon does feel bad about what's happening to Snake, but that doesn't stop him from teasing him.

"Your suit is kind of like a crutch." or "You sure you're not senile?" or "You old geezer."

He's grown accustomed to the way Snake behaves, and these two always take the piss out of each other, because that's just what friends do. So don't worry about having Otacon always be concerned for Snake, and I recommend seeing Otacon's more playful side.

Ok thanks for the feedback! I know where you're coming from. Yeah, Otacon does often tease Snake about his old age and such. Playful side I can do :D

Hey, I was actually reading your threads with Saft and I think you're having Otacon coming on a little strongly. Otacon, by the time of MGS4, has grown and changed from the man he used to be. Sure, he still likes anime, but he doesn't obsess over it as much anymore.

He does become attached to people, but all of the motivations are different. He was attached to Sniper Wolf because she was the only person who was kind to him during the takeover. After that, he grew and changed more. He wasn't actually in love with Emma; she was in love with him. But he had a huge amount of regret in his heart for not being there for her, and he feels like he failed again. After that, he changed again and decided he'd always be there for his loved ones.

In MGS4, he's close with Sunny who is basically a daughter to him, so he's very protective of her. He became enamored with Naomi not only because of her beauty, but because she was a scientist who understood him. A scientist used to make horrible things. The fact there was another person that a) was interested in him and b) understood him so perfectly was extremely refreshing for him.

Snake he's attached to because they work together, have been friends for 9 years.

But Saft? He has only just met her. Saft is about 17 years old in people terms, and I think Otacon is coming on very strongly. Their conversation aboard the Nomad after Saft's talk with Miller is very awkward because she wasn't gone that long-- maybe a few hours. It's true that Otacon can be awkward around women, but in MGS4 he's not nearly as bad as he used to be. The parts with Naomi were meant to be awkward because they both had feelings for each other, but I'm not sure why Otacon would have any feelings for Saft, other than him thinking she's a pretty cool kid. If that's the case, the way you play this interaction makes it look like Otacon is in love with her, rather than just thinking she's a nice kid.


Also, I think it would be prudent for you to read posts and tags more closely. You appear to miss valuable information when you respond to tags, making for characters being very confused and having to restate things that were done a few seconds ago. It's okay to miss things sometimes, we all do, but it happens very frequently.


I'm happy you're playing Otacon, but it might be worthwhile to have a review of MGS4, since that's when you've taken him from. Reexamine his motivations and such.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't mean to have Otacon come on too strongly on Saft and I do understand what you're saying. I'll try and build from my mistakes and hopefully make Otacon more like his self in MGS4.

Yeah, agreeing with Hebby on ALOT of things that she's said. I know I covered a bunch of stuff in our private plurk together but there;s some other stuff too that just kinda seems off with Otacon from what I know of the games compared to playing against yours.

* Otacon is super clingy with Saft and to me it comes off as rather creepy, especially considering Saft's background involves the fact that her father used to abuse the shit out of her whether it being mentally (and those months where he had her locked up and beat her half to death) she's rather selective of who she trusts to be that close towards her. Saft looks up to Snake because he's a hero and he's gotten her out of a few scrapes. Saft likes Otacon and stuff but not to the point where she'd ever allow him to come and hug her like he does. At the end of the day, she's still a teenager so older man/young girl shenanigans just comes off as kind of creepy.

*Otacon's characterization sometimes seems kind of off like Hebby mentioned. I've recently been watching the cutscenes from MGS4 and he doesn't seem quite as overactive as you play him if that makes sense?

* One thing I've noticed when we play together is that you make Hal ask questions about EVERYTHING. Or he over explains stuff...It's awkward and sometimes makes things very hard to reply to because in my opinion he just wouldn't. There's been a few times where he's gone off in a long spiel about how he thinks Saft is a "very intelligent beautiful, smart young woman" or something equal to that and I'm like "Uh...okay Otacon, You're trying to make friends with her not woo her off her feet." or anything like that because it just sounds so weird when you read that stuff in a thread.

*I also nessecarily don't want to play smutty/shippy stuff and sometimes other players don't either. It's always a good idea to probably ask the mun where they want to go with a thread otherwise it leads to some awkward interactions and the other player will start to feel uncomfortable. I'd also warn people if there's sudden smut in the middle of no where with a header with smut or a trigger warning for sexual abuse if you happen to do any smutty stuff with Volgin for example. Just so if anyone comes by our threads they'll know that they should probably stop reading from a certain point if that kind of stuff upsets them.

Yeah, it does make sense. Thanks for the crit and I welcome any help from either you or Hebby in playing any of my peeps. Once again, I apologise for any offence caused by my actions.

I'll aim to improve Hal and not come across as clingy/creepy in the future. I know that Hal is quite a shy guy underneath and hugging women is something he'd probably shy away from anyway. He's never really had a real girlfriend, so his relationships with women is rather awkward anyhow. I'll aim to improve and make my Hal a more realistic character for our threads. Also, the thing about the smut threads? I apologise and will now warn people if anything ever happens in that nature.
